This shield has a plywood core, but everything else is produced using historical techniques and materials.
I aim to produce shields for medieval reenactment that look and feel like authentic medieval shields.
How it’s made:
-Plywood core
-Linen Facing (Front and back) fixed and saturated with hide glue
-Gesso coating (chalk and glue), for extra protection and a nice white basecoat
-Enarmes of tanned leather, attached with clinch nails (washers for the upper hand strap)
The enarmes also allow for a center grip – this is found on some surviving shields (Marburg Lion Shield)
